The following message was sent to President William J Clinton
and received by the White House on Thursday, February 24, 2000

Dear Mr President:

Your letters of June 1, 1998 and May 10, 1999 are greatly appreciated, as are your labors on behalf of the American people in particular and humanity in general.

What prompts this message is a recent very disturbing series of developments in Jersey City, New Jersey, which in my opinion warrants an impartial investigation by the appropriate Federal agencies.

On January 29, 2000 a 15 year old young person was slain by gun shot in a confrontation with local police authorities. This writer first learned of the incident from an item in the local daily media, however, "official" and unofficial accounts have frequently changed and the citizens are confused and have not been told what really happened. Meanwhile, rumors and potentially explosive controversies have intensified.

On Wednesday, February 23, 2000 several hundred citizens exercised their First Amendment privileges and peacefully marched more than a mile from a local church to City Hall to petition the Municipal Council to pass a resolution to ask Federal and State authorities to investigate the matter and to impartially determine the facts. The resolution was voted down by the council.

As a journalist who normally covers sports events, and who has deep concerns for Human Rights, the above matter is deeply disturbing. Without the facts, objective and responsible decisions and comments cannot be made. Meanwhile a grieving and perplexed family and confused community have many unanswered questions. Moreover, dangerous tensions escalate.

I respectfully urge that you exercise the authority of your office to instruct the proper agencies to provide the American people with an accurate answer to the question of "What Happened on the night of January 29, 2000 to Michael Anglin in Jersey City, NJ"?

Sincerely,

Stan Daniels, Editor,
