"We need to understand each other's culture.
When we don't understand we fear

We need to honor diversity and each other."

WHY, on a sports Web site,

"HUMAN RIGHTS & HUMAN WRONGS?"

Some people may wonder and question why a primarily "sports" organization has such a deep concern and interest in "Human Rights" issues. To this we briefly answer, "Aren't all athletes human beings?" If and when we go into more detail, we can either point to world history where from antiquity to the present there are a multitude of examples of athletic, artistic and culturally involved people advancing the causes of Human Rights, world peace and international understanding. (Remember, in antiquity, they used to stop wars in order to hold the Olympic Games. In the Twentieth Century it was just the opposite! It remains to be seen how events develop in the new millennium.)

Or, if folks wish to get "personal," we can have some of our many past or present athletes and/or staff members give their own answers. We are readily accessible by E-mail.

Or you could ask Jermaine Grant, Danny Reyes, Keshon Moore and Rayshawn Brown. On April 23, 1998, those four student athletes were on their way to seek fulfilment of their dreams of excellence on the collegiate basketball courts.

Suddenly, however, their dreams were turned into nightmares the repercussions of which shall probably be played out in the courts of civil and criminal law for several years. In a blaze of gunfire, the unarmed and innocent student athletes were gunned down by state troopers on the New Jersey Turnpike in an unprovoked traffic stop which has made the term "racial profiling" a household phrase around the world and a campaign hot potato for certain American politicians.

The only "dangerous" item in that minivan transporting those student athletes was a copy of the Holy Bible - "God's two-edged sword"! That book informs us that "You shall know the TRUTH and the truth shall set you FREE"! I have also taken a peek into the "back of the book" - so I know who wins in the end!

"Enough said?"

RELEVANT RECENT NEWS STORIES!

JERUSALEM WELCOMES THE POPE!

Jews, Christians and Muslims enthusiastically welcomed the Pope to the Middle East on his pilgrimage of peace and reconciliation. The Pontiff, a long time advocate of Human Rights, who has confronted communists and capitalists with the same message, and opposed the "culture of death" which has afflicted millions around the world, is respected and admired around the world by people of many faiths. His trip to the Holy Land is a fulfillment of his long time dream to visit the land where the patriarchs of the three major monotheistic religions laid their foundations of faith. Extensive articles covering the visit may be found on the EWTN Web site. Related subject matter may be found in our most recent Seasons Greetings message and in this Human Rights Directory.

NEW JERSEY JAILS REV SHARPTON!

"Meanwhile back in the States," New Jersey has incarcerated Rev Al Sharpton, another Human Rights activist, of the National Action Network, for leading demonstrations exposing the practice of "racial profiling" which was thrust into the worldwide spotlight when four unarmed, innocent student athletes were gunned down by State Troopers in an unprovoked traffic stop on the New Jersey Turnpike in April of 1998.

The four student athlete shooting victims and Martin Luther King III (the son of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr) accompanied Rev Sharpton to the Atlantic County NJ jail to show their support. While the governor of New Jersey (Christine Todd Whitman) could have commuted the sentence, she has chosen not to. The fact that the judge in the case was an "African American" should not confuse anyone familiar with history. After all, there were some "Africans" who shared complicity in the trans-Atlantic slave trade and some whites who were enslaved (not merely "indentured"). In the words of at least one notable anthropologist - "All my 'skin folk' ain't my 'kin folk'."

Human Rights issues are matters of right and wrong not skin pigmentation. Even the automobile and electrical appliance industries have proven that "lemons can come in all sizes shapes and colors" - so, in other words, "it ain't the paint"!

NEWS UPDATES!
~~~~~~
Rev Sharpton has since been released from the Atlantic County NJ Jail. The judge is reported to have cut short the sentence after hearing appeals from leaders in the local community.
~~~~~~
STATE SETTLES WITH NJ TURNPIKE SHOOTING VICTIMS

After several months of controversy and litigation, the state of New Jersey "has agreed to pay $ 12.95 million to settle a lawsuit filed [by the victims of] the 1998 shooting on the New Jersey Turnpike" according to an Associated Press news item. The February 2001 AP news item also indicated that the state Attorney General "is asking a judge to dismiss criminal charges in 77 cases where [128] defendants claimed to be victims of [racial] profiling."
